The best
environmental
performance

We aim to inspire, motivate and lead our customers into a greener tomorrow.

Minimise environmental impact

Management approach

Our solutions contribute to more sustainable urban development by enabling highly efficient waste management systems. At the same time, we are well aware that our solutions use energy and resources with a negative environmental impact. We are continuously working to further reduce our impact with energy efficient solutions and by reducing the impacts from our own operations.

We want Envac customers to know that they have chosen the best waste collection solution from an environmental perspective.

How we do it

Technical innovation

The Envac Automation Platform (EAP) is an Artificial Intelligence platform that enables automated waste collection systems to learn and optimise over time. EAP collects real-time data to monitor and inform when particular inlets are full. We are currently using the third generation of the EAP, which is constantly being further developed.

The platform is able to learn the usage patterns of end users down to each individual inlet. This means it can learn how to best optimise the entire system to minimise energy consumption.

“EAP is a modern and innovative platform interface that is supporting our work to optimise the energy efficiency of our products. By upgrading systems to the latest version of EAP, we have been able to decrease energy use by up to 50% at customer sites”

Driving resource efficiency
An Envac automated waste collection system decreases the need for heavy traffic by 90% and reduces the CO2 emissions from heavy traffic by 90%. This is testified by many of our customers and has been proven in independent studies.

We monitor energy use at customer sites through a kWh/tonne KPI. Any issues are identified and we help customers to promote efficiency.

In our own operations, we monitor our own footprint from service vans and waste collection trucks for our mobile services. As our mobile waste collection trucks use a lot of fuel, we run them on HVO Biodiesel, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions.

Our truck drivers also work to optimise fuel efficiency through employee-driven activities, such as creating best practice procedures for operating trucks, to support our overall resource efficiency targets. In addition, we are currently trialling an electric service van and project vehicle in Sweden.

In terms of product resource efficiency, all standard Envac products undergo a third-party product lifecycle assessment, which includes the materials we use. Customers are increasingly interested in the lifecycle environmental footprint of our products, and these assessments give us the opportunity to be transparent on the materials we use. We also actively recycle when replacing parts in our systems.

Recycled plastic bags

Good waste management systems today require bags or other waste containers in order to sort and separate different waste fractions prior to material recycling. Envac uses bags made from recycled plastic in its systems to promote the circular economy. In some markets, the used plastic bags are incinerated to generate energy and we are currently investigating the lifecycle environmental impact our plastic bags have.

“In 2020, the Swedish management
team decided to set an overall target
on internal resource efficiency for 2021.
This target has been broken down in
to department goals and activities”

Building strong customer partnerships

We want our systems to be operated in the most energy efficient way. This is achieved with a long experience of ’know how’. We have delivered automated waste collection systems since 1961. We know how to design and install efficient systems and we know that the solution works. Together with our customers, we use our expertise to implement suitable actions when a system is using excessive energy.

“We monitor energy consumption,
both as a total and per fraction at
our customer facility in Järfälla
(Barkarby). Our energy performance
exceeds our targets, which has been
achieved through close contact
with the customer, our focus on
optimising the operation of the system
and preventive maintenance”

Mikael Raita
Service Manager, Envac Scandinavia AB

Future ambitions

Our environmental performance is good, but we see potential to further improve. We believe we have an opportunity to further develop awareness of the environmental impacts of our products and services throughout value chain.

Our systems require energy to operate, however we have opportunities to promote the sourcing of renewable energy in our systems around the world.

Our targets to minimise environmental impact

  • Reduce emissions from the operation of our systems at customer sites
  • Reduce emissions from our own internal operation
