project pioneers sustainable waste collection solution
Envac is part of the GrowSmarter project, which is an initiative to stimulate smart city solutions. The company was selected to demonstrate the sustainability benefits of automated waste collection system with optical sorting technology.
GrowSmarter is an EU-funded initiative created to bring together cities and industry in order to showcase 12 ‘smart city’ solutions in energy, infrastructure and transport across three Lighthouse cities – Stockholm, Barcelona and Cologne. Envac was selected to demonstrate the sustainability potential of its RFID waste monitoring ability combined with Optibag technology – an optical sorting system that separates multiple waste streams using colour-coded bags.
“The City of Stockholm is happy to have Envac as partner in this project to showcase new innovative solutions in order to develop a smarter and more inclusive Stockholm”
Gustaf Landahl, Head of Department, Planning and Environment,City of Stockholm and GrowSmarter coordinator
“Waste management is one of the areas we want to continue to develop in order to minimise its impact on both the local and global environment.”
Nine newly designed waste inlets have been placed in the residential neighbourhood Valla Torg in Stockholm with approximately 300 households. The GrowSmarter project measured a 71% reduction in CO2 emissions, 90% reduction in waste collection traffic and 66% reduction in unsorted waste.
The Envac system has established a scalable smart waste collection solution that provides the municipality with real-time data on waste disposal and helps residents better understand their waste footprint.
